Opens up a whole new world for women and men!
Geomatics is the science and technology of gathering, analysing, interpreting and distributing spatial information. Geomatics encompasses a broad range of disciplines to create a detailed and understandable picture of the physical world using cutting edge technology and working both in and out of doors.
What fields can I specialise in?
Land Surveying: Involves the survey of land (townships or farms) and buildings for the purpose of creating boundaries and rights to that land and property. The Professional Land Surveyor is playing an increasing role in land development and Reform and works at professional level with planners, architects and
engineers.
Geodesy: Geodesy is the study of the shape and size of the earth, its gravity field and national control networks.
Geographic Information: Science (GIS) GIS is the management of information as well as decision support systems using geographically referenced data. Various types of data sets, such as rivers, roads, mapping, and land cover contain numerous pieces of information about a specific feature can all be tied together geographically.
Engineering Surveying: Involves taking measurements for the design, setting out and monitoring of roads, freeways, railways, bridges, tunnels and other large structures.
Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry: Remote sensing is the science of acquiring information about the Earth's surface without actually being in contact with it. This is done by sensing and recording images and processing, analysing, and applying that information.
Mapping & Cartography: The art, science, and technology of map design and production. Cartography applies the fundamental scientific procedures of accurate measurement, classification, and the identification of relationships, to create visual models of our complex world.
Matric/Senior certificate subject required.
To enter a University or a University of Technology to study for the various qualifications to become a Professional Surveyor, Technologist, Technician or GIS Practitioner, you will need specific matric subjects. Please check with the university to make sure your subject choice and pass rate meets the criteria for the relevant qualification.
It is important to note that only the qualifications listed on the "Where to study"page are recognised by the previous South African Council for Professional and Technical Surveyors (PLATO) as the required academic qualification to register in the listed category. Graduates with these qualifications only need to submit their diplomas/degrees and record of practical experience to apply for the law exam and registration.
Persons with other qualifications will have to submit their academic records including curricula and lecture hours for each particular course to SAGC for consideration.
