South Africa is responsible for publishing and maintaining 16 sheets of this world-wide chart series covering the southern part of Africa. This series has accurate but generalised base maps with only the most important topographical detail shown to enable the overprinted aeronautical information to be clearly legible. Each sheet covers an area of 4 degrees in latitude and 6 degrees in longitude with a north and east overlap of 15 minutes.
The International Civil Aviation Organisation prescribes the rules and regulations regarding aeronautical information shown on these charts such as navigational aids, air routes, etc.
Projection : Lambert Conformal Conic with two standard parallels.
Sheet area covered : 4º x 6º with 15' north and east overlap
The series of provincial maps provides a map of each province, on its own, on a single sheet. The map is designed mainly for administrative purposes and depicts the cities, towns, smaller urban centres, district/regional councils, rural councils (rural local government) and magisterial districts, as well as the main road and rail networks, main rivers and dams, protected areas and airports.
With the whole province shown on one sheet the scale of the map of each province varies depending on the size of the province - the scales are as follows : Limpopo 1:600 000, North West 1:700 000, Gauteng 1:300 000, Mpumalanga 1:600 000, Northern Cape 1:1 200 000, Free State 1:700 000, KwaZulu-Natal 1:700 000, Western Cape 1:800 000, Eastern Cape 1:800 000.
Projection : Lambert Conformal Conic with two standard parallels.
Coverage : Each province on a separate sheet.
The 1:500 000 Topographical base map is used as a background and the latest aeronautical information is overprinted in brilliant blue. The Aeronautical Chart is produced in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) requirements. This series consists of 23 map sheets, each generally covering an area of 2º latitude and 4º longitude. Heights are depicted in feet. This map is used for route planning and is suitable for pilots flying (VFR) Visual Flight Rules.
The International Civil Aviation Organisation prescribes the rules and regulations regarding aeronautical information shown on these charts such as navigational aids, air routes etc.
